Waipoua Forest is a highly recommended stop for inclusion on any North Island itinerary travelling north of Auckland.  It is the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland and contains New Zealand’s largest kauri tree.  Named Tane Mahuta or ‘Lord of the Forest’, the tree is around 1200 years old and almost 4.4 meters in diameter.  At night, Waipoua Footprints can provide you with a magical night-time experience.  Wearing a miner’s headlamp you will be escorted by local Maori guides as the rhythms and sounds of the forest come alive around you.

Waipoua Forest lies on Northland’s Kauri Coast, between Dargaville and Omapere.
